The UN Regional Congress on Women in Tourism wrapped up today, marking a significant step towards enhancing the tourism sector in Sierra Leone and the wider region.

The event drew attention to the vital role of women in tourism and the potential for economic growth through this sector.

Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh made a statement to close the congress, emphasizing the opportunities available to expand tourism in Sierra Leone. He highlighted the importance of investing in shared regional infrastructure, which he believes could attract more visitors and generate substantial economic benefits for local communities.

“By empowering women and fostering collaboration, we can unlock the tourism potential within our region,” he stated.

The congress featured a series of discussions and workshops aimed at addressing the challenges faced by women in the tourism industry, including access to funding, leadership opportunities, and sustainable practices.

Participants included government officials, industry leaders, and representatives from various NGOs, all united in their commitment to promoting gender equality and enhancing tourism.

Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs Nabeela Tunis played a pivotal role in organizing the event, which received praise for its focus on actionable outcomes. “This congress is not just about discussions; it’s about creating pathways for women to thrive in tourism,” Tunis remarked during the closing session.

The congress concluded with recommendations to foster regional cooperation and investment in tourism, underscoring the need for collective action to support women and drive economic growth.
