H.E. Amara SM Sowa, Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Sierra Leone, addressed the UN Security Council today during a briefing on threats to international peace and security, focusing on the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage.
The meeting, convened at the Russian Federation’s request, highlighted ongoing concerns regarding the incident, which has remained unresolved for two years.
Ambassador Sowa expressed gratitude for the opportunity to discuss the critical issue and reiterated Sierra Leone’s condemnation of the destruction of civilian infrastructure, emphasizing its violation of international law.
He underscored the need for accountability and the protection of civilians, stating, “Our responsibility to maintain global peace and security includes the protection of lives, property, and human dignity worldwide.”
Despite investigations by Denmark, Sweden, and Germany confirming deliberate sabotage, no one has been assigned blame, leaving the international community seeking clarity. Sowa pointed out that the ongoing investigations are crucial for accountability and preventing further escalation of tensions among stakeholders involved in the Nord Stream project.
The Ambassador stressed the urgency of a credible and transparent investigation and urged the Security Council to support Germany’s inquiry’s timely conclusion.
Furthermore, he warned that undue delays could undermine efforts to maintain international peace and security, stating, “Our global system is under immense strain due to ongoing conflicts and emerging geopolitical and economic interests.”
Sowa reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to respecting territorial integrity and protecting civilian infrastructure, calling for the prompt release of a consolidated investigation report.
