In a significant turn of events, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chaired by Deputy Speaker Ibrahim Tawa Conteh has ruled out Gento Group of Companies’ involvement in the alleged double payment saga, as detailed in the 2022 Auditor General’s Report. The ruling, delivered during the ongoing public hearings on Tuesday, 11th June 2024, brought clarity to the matter, absolving the company of any wrongdoing.

PAC Chairman Conteh, after a meticulous examination of the issue, revealed that the mistake leading to the allegations stemmed from a suspension imposed on the company. This suspension, according to Conteh, hindered Gento Group from providing essential advice that could have clarified the documents in question and averted the error.

In a post-hearing engagement with the press, CEO Mohamed Gento Kamara expressed a mix of emotions. While relieved that the truth had come to light, he voiced the pain inflicted on his company’s reputation by the false claims. Emphasizing integrity as a cornerstone of Gento Group’s ethos, Kamara reiterated his commitment to upholding it in all endeavors.

Kamara recounted his efforts to refute the allegations, including public appearances on radio stations to clarify the distinction between certificate 1 and certificate 1A, emphasizing that they were separate entities. Additionally, he highlighted the contractual obligation for compensation in the event of contract suspension, further refuting any wrongdoing on the company’s part.

Expressing dismay at being unjustly portrayed, Kamara asserted his longstanding reputation and disavowed any association with such misconduct. Despite the ordeal, he announced his decision not to pursue legal action, extending gratitude to the Audit Service Sierra Leone and the PAC for conducting a fair hearing.

In a message directed at Sierra Leoneans, Kamara urged against presuming guilt without evidence, advocating for fairness and trust in the nation’s businesses. As the cloud of suspicion dissipates, Gento Group of Companies looks ahead with renewed resolve, committed to its principles and dedicated to serving the community.

The resolution of this matter marks a significant milestone, not only for Gento Group but also for the integrity and accountability of public processes in Sierra Leone.
