In a determined effort to address gender imbalance and promote gender equality in both the district and the nation, the Kono Students Union (KONSU) successfully concluded its annual Girls Empowerment Summit, themed “Redefining the Future.” This second edition of the summit aimed to empower young women, encouraging their active participation in the social, economic, and political spheres of the Union. The event sought to promote gender equality by preparing female students for leadership roles post-university.
The summit attracted over two hundred university students and young girls from secondary schools across Kono District, engaging them in meaningful discussions on female representation and gender equality. These dialogues focused on strategies to overcome obstacles and foster a more inclusive future for women in Sierra Leone.
In her keynote address, Mrs. Melrose Kamity, the Minister of Social Welfare, emphasized the necessity of collaborative efforts to redefine the future of the young generation. She highlighted the critical roles that the government, parents, and community leaders play in nurturing the potential of young people, particularly young girls who have historically been marginalized. Mrs. Kamity called on all stakeholders to remain committed to supporting and empowering young women.
Madam Rebecca J. Yambasu, the Deputy Chairperson of the Kono District Council, echoed similar sentiments, stressing that redefining the future hinges on cultivating good leaders rather than followers. She urged parents to practice gender equality in their child-rearing practices, pointing out that discrimination, home stereotypes, sexual harassment, and gender-based violence are significant barriers to female leadership in Sierra Leone.
Keziah Fears, the President of KONSU, underscored the importance of resilience and forward-thinking. She encouraged participants to learn from past mistakes, work hard towards their goals, and maintain focus on their visions and dreams despite challenges. Fears also addressed issues such as substance and drug abuse, urging those affected to change their paths and pursue greatness.
On behalf of her peers, Jeneba Alppha, a student from Unique International Academy in Kono District, expressed gratitude to the current executive of KONSU for organizing the summit. She praised the event as highly educational and urged the Union to continue hosting similar initiatives in the future.
The Girls Empowerment Summit by KONSU stands as a significant step towards achieving gender equality in Kono District and beyond, providing a platform for young women to voice their aspirations and contribute to the socio-political landscape of Sierra Leone.
