In a decisive move aimed at combating the escalating crisis of Kush and substance abuse, the government has officially declared Kush as a National Emergency. The announcement came during a weekly press conference, led by Deputy National Coordinator of Public Health Emergency Agency, Dr. James Squire.

Dr. Squire underscored the gravity of the situation, stating that the rampant spread of Kush had disrupted national agendas, particularly in the realm of Human Capital Development, prompting the President’s intervention. Backed by data-driven insights, the President sanctioned the declaration, leading to the establishment of the National Task Force on Drug and Substance Abuse, with Professor Foday Sahr appointed as the National Coordinator.

Prior to the Task Force’s inception, Dr. Squire acknowledged the efforts of various Ministries, Agencies, and Departments in combating Kush. He emphasized their role in coordination and immediate response to Kush victims.

Outlining the Task Force’s strategies, Dr. Squire delineated a comprehensive approach. Prevention measures aim to reduce drug abuse among youth by 80% within the next two years through awareness campaigns and promoting healthy alternatives. Care and treatment initiatives prioritize establishing treatment centers nationwide, providing centralized care for drug addicts, and extending social support.

Moreover, stringent law enforcement measures are in place to dismantle the supply chain of Kush. Community engagement is deemed pivotal in the fight against substance abuse.

Dr. Squire revealed the establishment of a situation room, serving as an information hub for all involved ministries. Structures have been finalized, with appointed senior officers tasked to manage operational and technical arms within the Task Force.

A comprehensive assessment team has been assembled to address the Kush crisis, utilizing findings to guide interventions effectively.

In a bid for decentralized response, structures are set to extend to district levels, with local council chairmen and district health officers appointed to spearhead the efforts.

In his concluding remarks, Dr. Squire expressed confidence in the Task Force’s ability to confront the Kush crisis head-on, emphasizing the collective commitment to safeguarding public health and welfare.
