In the latest development of the trial involving Alpha Sheriff Alias APC Sheriff and Alhaji Saidu Fofanah, the proceedings took a significant turn as Justice Adrian Fisher presided over the hearing. The accused persons are facing three counts charges, including operating a private security service without a valid license, possession of small arms without a license, and unlawfully concealing arms.

The matter, which commenced in November, has progressed steadily, with both parties presenting their arguments before the court. Defense counsel, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara, representing the accused persons, reiterated and adopted previous bail applications, emphasizing that the accused had been behind bars for over a year for a regulatory offense. He highlighted those individuals charged with more serious offenses such as murder, robbery, and corruption had been granted bail, questioning the prolonged detention for a regulatory offense.

In response, state prosecutor Yusif Isaac Sesay Esq emphasized the seriousness of the charges, particularly count one and two, asserting that they are not merely regulatory offenses but entail implications under the Central Intelligence Act of 2023. He argued against bail, citing concerns for public security, especially given the involvement of weapons in the case.

Justice Adrian Fisher addressed the accused persons, explaining the timeline of the proceedings and urging patience. He clarified that the court’s decision to refuse bail was influenced by considerations for public safety, given the nature of the charges and the presence of weapons. He encouraged the accused to communicate any issues in prison to their legal representatives.

Consequently, bail was denied, and the accused persons were remanded to the male correctional facility in Freetown. The matter was adjourned to April 19, 2024, with the prosecution intending to present witnesses on the next scheduled hearing date.

The trial continues to attract attention as it unfolds, with the judiciary emphasizing adherence to the law and ensuring the fair administration of justice.
