In a recent Government press briefing organized on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, Information and Civic Education Minister Chernor Bah unveiled the significant benefits of Sierra Leone’s new Identity Cards, confirming their acceptance for air transportation within the ECOWAS region. The ECOWAS Identity Cards, issued by the National Civil Registration Authority (NCRA), now serve as legitimate travel documents for West African States.

Minister Bah emphasized the pivotal role of the National Identity Cards in accessing various services, including banking, public education, and security-related services. He reiterated the government’s mandate, established since 2022, requiring all citizens, including students, to obtain their National Identity Cards.

Reflecting on his recent experience at the NCRA office, Minister Bah highlighted the efficiency and accessibility of the registration process. Upon providing his information, he received immediate confirmation via text message and was informed of the expected delivery of his national Identity Card within two to three business days.

Minister Bah urged the citizens of Sierra Leone and the media to support this initiative, underscoring the importance of Identity Cards in bolstering state security. He assured the public of the Ministry’s commitment to facilitating the process by announcing designated locations for card acquisition and emphasizing affordability and accessibility.

Furthermore, Minister Bah outlined the various categories of Identity Cards available, including those for citizens and residents, non-residents living in Sierra Leone (foreigners), and ECOWAS Identity Cards for travel within the region.

The introduction of these Identity Cards marks a significant step towards enhancing national security and facilitating regional travel within the ECOWAS community. With the Government’s commitment and the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders, Sierra Leoneans can now avail themselves of these essential documents with ease and convenience.
