It’s heartwarming to see the Global Foundation for Women and Development (GFWD) recognizing and celebrating the achievements of outstanding Sierra Leonean women. The awards ceremony highlighted the accomplishments of four remarkable women: Mrs. Minny H. Mahoi Gilles, Madam Adama B. Wurie, Mrs. Margaret A.A.E. Nelson-Williams, and Haja Theresa F. Swaray.
Madam Adama B. Wurie’s dedication to social work and her contributions to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees in several countries showcase her commitment to helping others. Mrs. Minny H. Mahoi Gilles’ life of service and positive outlook on challenging situations is commendable.
Mrs. Margaret Nelson-Williams’ extensive career in the public sector, particularly in education, reflects her impactful leadership and community development efforts. Haja Theresa F. Swaray’s long-term service as a Community Health Officer and subsequent role as a consultant demonstrates her continued commitment to community well-being.
The ceremony, attended by the Mayor of Freetown, Her Worship Yvonne Akie Sawyer, emphasized the sacrifices made by these women and the countless untold stories of other remarkable women in Sierra Leone. The GFWD, sponsored by various individuals and families, including those in the UK, Sierra Leone, and Ghana, plays a vital role in acknowledging and celebrating women’s contributions.
Dr. Margaret Konima Sesay, the founding member and Director of GFWD, expressed gratitude to the awardees for their service and highlighted the resilience of Sierra Leonean women, despite gender inequalities. The event coincided with a significant historical date, recalling the invasion of Freetown by the Revolutionary United Front Rebels in 1999.
The launch of the Girls Empowerment and Development Program for Harford School for Girls in Moyamba, aimed at supporting girls with sanitary products, is a commendable initiative. Additionally, Mrs. Margaret Nelson-Williams’ upcoming footwear factory and the support received for the project further demonstrate the impact of the awards ceremony.
The generous donations, such as Madam Adama B. Wurie’s contribution to the girls’ empowerment program and the support for the shoe project, reflect the community’s commitment to uplifting one another. The GFWD’s nationwide apron project for market women, promoting hygiene and sanitation, is another noteworthy endeavor.
The event also featured a fashion show by Mrs. Margaret Nelson-Williams, showcasing her talents as a designer and Milliner. Overall, the ceremony was described as an evening of elegance, glamour, celebration, and recognition.
Kudos to all the members, sponsors, and supporters of GFWD for organizing such a meaningful and impactful event that not only recognizes outstanding women but also contributes to community development.
