The Commissioner of the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA), Amb. Ernest Mbaimba Ndomahina, officially inaugurated the workshop on Capacity Building of Local Councils for Implementing Social Protection Programmes. The primary objective of the workshop is to enhance the councils’ capacity to implement social protection interventions and define critical roles and responsibilities.
In his opening statement, NaCSA Regional Coordinator Joseph Farama expressed sincere gratitude to the attendees, including Mayors, District Chairpersons, Chief Administrators, and other management staff from various councils. Farama acknowledged the significant contribution of local councils to NaCSA’s interventions, describing their involvement as phenomenal.
The Mayor of the Port Loko City Council, His Worship Alie Badara Tarawallie, welcomed Commissioner Ndomahina and his team to Port Loko, assuring them of their safety throughout their stay. Tarawallie emphasized the importance of the workshop, urging all attendees to give it their utmost attention.
Addressing the participants, Commissioner Ndomahina highlighted the continuous support from the Government of Sierra Leone, along with contributions from development partners such as the World Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, UNICEF, the German Development Bank, and other donors. Ndomahina referenced President Julius Maada Bio’s commitment to mitigating the economic challenges, as stated in his New Year’s message, and emphasized the dedication to a “robust social protection” in the 2024 budget.
Ndomahina informed council representatives that the Commission, through the National Social Protection Secretariat (NSPS), had previously conducted training on the implementation of social protection programmes for core staff of local councils. He reiterated the Commission’s commitment to supporting the capacity building of strategic personnel within the councils, including mayors, deputy mayors, and chairpersons, to actively participate in programmes like the Productive Social Safety Nets and Youth Employment (PSSNYE) project.
“In that regard, kindly permit me to declare this all-important session opened…” concluded Amb. Ndomahina, underscoring the significance of the workshop in furthering the government’s efforts to uplift communities and combat poverty.
