Youth In Action Joins Forces With National Drug Agency For Anti-Drug Campaign

In a significant effort to strengthen collaboration and intensify the battle against substance abuse in Sierra Leone, Youth in Action Against Drug Abuse Network convened a constructive meeting with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at their Walpole Street office in Freetown.

The meeting took place in the Conference Room at the Walpole Street office in Freetown. Umaru Kanu, the Founder and Executive Director, provided an overview of their organization’s purpose for the visit. Kanu emphasized that substance abuse is a pervasive issue in the country, claiming the lives of many young individuals. As a youth-led community-based organization, they are committed to leading the charge against this menace.

Kanu expressed the need for a collaborative partnership to gain access to valuable information on effectively addressing substance abuse in the country. He emphasized that the fight against substance abuse should be community-based and handled with care. Kanu also mentioned their plans to organize a festive season campaign against substance abuse, seeking support, whether financial or moral.

Madam Francess Kargbo, the Project Manager of Youth in Action Against Drug Abuse Network Sierra Leone, highlighted the concerning rise of women involved in drug abuse in the country. She stressed the importance of youth sensitization as a crucial step to reduce the prevalent drug use among the youth.

In response, Mr. Ibrahim Dugba, the Director of Public Education at the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, expressed satisfaction with the collaborative initiative. He welcomed such partnerships, stating that supporting youth groups aligns with the agency’s objectives. Dugba assured the group of the agency’s readiness to provide assistance in various forms.

The meeting concluded with meticulous planning for a comprehensive and sustainable campaign against substance abuse in the country. The participants highlighted the importance of eradicating the misuse of drugs among the youth through collective efforts.
