The chairman of the Human Rights Committee in Kono District says the government is not doing much to protect the rights of people in Sierra Leone.

Chairman Isaiah Suluku disclosed this to our reporter in Kono when explaining the importance of the Human Rights Day Celebration which is observed on every December 10.

He said last year Human Rights Day was commemorated on the theme “Recover better stand up Human Rights”.

Last year’s event focused on the devastating fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic on the underprivileged people, children and women and the need to build resilience using Human Rights lens around recovery efforts.

Chairman Suluku said the Human Rights Committee is in Kono District to promotion the ideal of non-violence against women and men. He added that since he assumed office, he has been working closely with his committee members to things on a sound footing.

He extended commendation to his committee members for their robust activities and prompt interventions into sexual penetration cases and Gender Based violence.

He said they are highly challenged to reach remote areas owing logistical gaps such as availability of motorbikes.

Chairman Suluku implored residents of Kono to stay away from sexual penetration and Gender Based Violence (GBV).

He assured our reporter that plans are afoot for effective and efficient operations of the committee to mitigate crimes based on preventive approaches.
