SEND Sierra Leone, a Local Non-Governmental Organization has rolled out their women’s empowerment project dubbed ‘More Than a woman Project’ at Njala University, Bo Campus, which is funded by Irish Aid. The project is coming at a time when the students of Njala University have elected the first female student union president.
Addressing female students of Njala University, Bo campus, the project Officer of SEND Sierra Leone, Elizabeth Sherriff said that she do not want women to look low upon themselves as if they cannot aspire for any leadership position in the society, as the project is designed to empower them to see themselves as capable to be included in governance . Madam Sherriff said that they want to socialize with men to play a key role in the governance of the nation.
“The Vision of SEND Sierra Leone is to ensure gender equality and promote good governance. We are not only targeting the students in universities but even the women in rural areas are targeted as young women need to be in governance so that they too can contribute meaningfully towards the development of Sierra Leone,’’ She said.
The newly elected President of Njala University, Bo Campus, Iye Abu thanked SEND Sierra Leone for capacitating the young women to take part in governance.
“I feel elated to be part of the sensitization meeting on the rolling of the SEND Sierra Leone empowerment project and it is coming at a time when we are taking the lead in the student union governance. I want to assure the women that I will not let them as I will deliver on my promises.’’ She said.
Madam Abu said that the women should know that they have the ability to provide quality and accountable leadership more than the men, and it is good that the men are giving them the space to exhibit it as it has happened at Njala University, Bo campus.
The Outgoing President of Njala University, Ismail Koroma said that he is a strong advocate of women’s empowerment and thus the reason he galvanized the support for Iye Abu to succeed him, whiles adding that he do not have any iota of doubt that that she can measure up to the expectations of the student body of Njala University.
