Sierra Leone’s ambitious Free Quality School Education (FQSE) project has received a significant boost following the recent conclusion of a high-profile review mission led by the World Bank and development partners.

The mission, which evaluated the program’s progress and identified areas for improvement, culminated in a closing meeting at the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) Conference Hall in New England Ville.

The FQSE initiative, introduced to expand access to quality education, has been a cornerstone of Sierra Leone’s efforts to uplift its education sector. Over the course of the review, stakeholders reflected on the program’s achievements, including increased enrollment rates, improved infrastructure, and strengthened teacher training programs.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Minister II of MBSSE, Madam Mamusu Morana, emphasized the need for sustained efforts:

“While we have made significant progress, we must not relent. Continuous improvement is essential to ensure the success of this initiative. Education is the foundation of our nation’s future, and we are committed to getting it right.”

The review mission highlighted key achievements, including a notable increase in primary and secondary school enrollment and the distribution of teaching and learning materials to underserved regions. However, challenges such as teacher shortages, infrastructure gaps, and regional disparities remain critical.

Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey, expressed gratitude to the World Bank and development partners, reaffirming the government’s dedication to the project:

“This partnership has been instrumental in driving change. Together, we are transforming Sierra Leone’s education landscape and unlocking opportunities for our children.”

The World Bank’s endorsement of the FQSE project marks a turning point for Sierra Leone, signing the international community’s confidence in the country’s vision for education reform. Moving forward, stakeholders aim to build on the progress made, ensuring that every child has access to free and quality education, irrespective of their background.

This milestone underscores Sierra Leone’s commitment to education as a critical pathway to national development and social transformation.
