Women in Mining and Extractives (WOME) has organized a day session with its members and women that are engaged in artisanal mining activities within the organization’s areas of operations in Kono District, on the central government’s covid-19 recovery plans for women in the district and the country as a whole.
The sessions which saw the distribution of at least eighty bags of 25kg rice and other cooking condiments as the organization’s covid-19 continual supports to its membership, was held at the Tankoro Native Administrative Barray and it brought together representatives of WOME from the Kono District Council, Ministries of Social Welfare, Agriculture and the Legal Aid Board Sierra Leone Kono Office.
According to the National Coordinator women on mining and extraction (WOME), Finda Esther Kandeh, the session was held for the targeted women to understand how the various sectors could seek for their legal rights and justice for the numerous challenges they are faced with during the Covid-19 pandemic, including but not limited to sexual, gender based violence and economic violence and to also understand government policies to take advantage of the law and ensure that their rights are being protected.
Meanwhile, Finda Moiwo and Kumba Dezin Tamba expressed their profound gratitude to the management of WOME for what they referred to as an eye opener session they have benefitted from and therefore appealed for continual support in the same direction in order to create an environment where informed and empowered women could live in a healthy resilient and inclusive communities.
