The 24th batch of the Chinese Medical Team (CMT24) bid farewell to Sierra Leone, marking the culmination of a year-long mission characterized by exemplary dedication and service to the local community. Their departure coincides with the arrival of the 25th Chinese Medical Team (CMT25), ushering in a new phase of cooperation in the health sector between China and Sierra Leone.
During their tenure, CMT24 made significant contributions to healthcare in Sierra Leone, treating over 22,000 patients and conducting more than 450 surgical operations. Their efforts extended beyond medical treatment, encompassing outreach programs, technical support for traditional medicine policy, and capacity-building initiatives for local healthcare professionals.
Notable achievements of CMT24 included life-changing surgeries such as cataract removal for a centenarian patient and the successful removal of 19 uterine fibroids for a deaf-mute patient. Additionally, they organized free clinics, provided malaria screenings for children, and contributed to upgrading Sierra Leone’s traditional medicine policies.
The departure of CMT24 comes at a pivotal moment in China-Sierra Leone relations, following a recent state visit by President Julius Maada Bio to China. Both governments reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation, particularly in the healthcare sector, recognizing China’s ongoing support during public health crises such as Ebola and COVID-19.
Moreover, ongoing initiatives such as the “Hospitals on Wheels” project, aimed at delivering healthcare to remote areas, highlight the innovative approaches being pursued to improve healthcare accessibility in Sierra Leone.
Looking ahead, the arrival of CMT25 signals continuity in China’s commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s healthcare system. With a focus on further enhancing cooperation and achieving tangible outcomes, the stage is set for continued progress in addressing healthcare challenges and advancing the well-being of the people of Sierra Leone.
The successful collaboration between China and Sierra Leone in the health sector underscores the potential for mutual benefit and underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing global health challenges.
The Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone H.E Wang Quing, the Honorable Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, deputy Minister Charles Senesse, and other leadership from MOH, were all in attendance.
