Owing to the increase in the number of road crashes taking place in Waterloo, in the Western Rural District, the Regional Traffic Officer of the district, ASP Mustapha Turay has called for an emergency medical facility to be located in Waterloo to save the lives of victims.
According to him, most victims die because there is no close emergency facility equipped to treat them except they are taken far away for treatment at the Emergency Hospital in Goderich.
He said they are not getting much cooperation from the drivers and riders management bodies.
He expressed the need for more sensitization engagements on the proper use of the road. He said human error is a contributing factor of the accidents taking place in the district.
He apportioned blame on lawlessness as another factor they are grappling with in spite of a number of challenges the traffic department of the Waterloo Police Station is faced with ranging from the lack of ambulance to lawlessness of commercial bike riders.
Also, the Bike Riders Union in Waterloo has expressed concern about the long distance to the only Emergency Hospital .
According to Chairman Gbero, a good number o their members have died partly because of the lack of emergency hospital in Waterloo. He said bike riding has helped take care of several households and further contributes to the country’s revenue generation.
He however lamented the fact that the are not recognized and provided the protection and safeguards needed to ply their trade.
