Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, underscored the significant challenges faced by the nation in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict during the official launch of the Human Development Report 2023/2024.
Organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sierra Leone, the event shed light on the detrimental effects of these global events on the country’s development progress and economic growth.
The Human Development Report extensively catalogued the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, highlighting their profound impact on Sierra Leone’s economy and development efforts.
While acknowledging advancements in the social sector, Vice President Jalloh emphasized the urgent need to bolster the productive sector to stimulate growth, generate employment opportunities, and foster investment in human capital.
Introducing the “Big Five Game Changers,” Vice President Jalloh outlined strategic initiatives and policies aimed at revitalizing the agricultural sector, promoting employment, and furthering investment in human capital. These initiatives are crucial for driving sustainable development and empowering Sierra Leone’s citizens.
Expressing gratitude to the UNDP for their support, Vice President Jalloh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to accelerating inclusive and sustainable development in the country.
The official launch of the Human Development Report 2023/2024 served as a platform to raise awareness, foster dialogue, and galvanize support from stakeholders across various sectors. It reinforced the collective determination to overcome obstacles on the nation’s path to inclusive and sustainable development, and to build a brighter future for Sierra Leone.
