In a shocking turn of events, the Sierra Leone Traders Union’s electoral process in Kono District was marred by violence, allegedly orchestrated by Sheik Abubakarr, the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) Kono District Secretary General. The incident, which occurred on 8th March 2024, has sparked outrage and calls for immediate investigation.

A correspondence from the National Secretariat of the Sierra Leone Traders Union condemned the violent disruption in the strongest terms. The Union accused Sheik Abubakarr of actively destroying election materials, captured in a viral video that circulated widely. This disruption reportedly occurred at the close of polls and the commencement of vote counting, depriving traders of their right to determine the outcome of their franchise.

The Union called upon the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and bring those responsible to justice. While emphasizing that the reported disruption was the action of an individual, the Union also urged the SLPP to take action against any members involved. Furthermore, the Union announced the nullification of the Kono District polls and pledged to announce next steps shortly.

Efforts to reach Sheik Abubakarr for comment were unsuccessful, as he reportedly expressed disinterest in the matter. Local gossip has raised concerns about the neutrality and professionalism of security personnel, alleging that they failed to intervene effectively during the disruption.

In response to the chaos, candidate Sallieu T. Komba issued a protest letter, demanding the cessation of what he termed as the illegal occupation of the Union’s office by former executives and rejecting any call for re-election. However, Osman Fofanah, the caretaker of the Union’s office, has yet to make a public statement.

The Sierra Leone Traders Union has vowed to engage with key stakeholders to address the issues that led to the disruption and will announce a new election date for the district. In the meantime, incumbent executives are urged to continue their lawful duties until further notice.
