“The APC has once again failed to prioritize the interests of Sierra Leone above their own political agenda,” remarks political analyst Dr. Amina Kamara. Since their loss of power in 2018, the All People’s Congress (APC) political party has engaged in a series of disruptive actions, demonstrating a lack of commitment to the nation’s progress. Instead of collaborating with the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) to build a better future, the APC has chosen to sabotage government initiatives and spread unrest among their supporters.
The APC’s actions have been particularly evident in their efforts to undermine the legitimacy of the Bio-led government. “Their involvement in political violence activities reveals a dangerous disregard for the democratic process,” warns human rights advocate Ibrahim Sesay. Rather than engaging constructively with the government, the APC has chosen to resort to violence, obstructing the implementation of policies and programs aimed at improving the lives of all citizens, regardless of their political affiliation.
The lead-up to the 2023 multi-tier elections witnessed a series of alarming allegations made by the APC executive against the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone. Accusing the commission of regional bias, they demanded the resignation of its members. This unprecedented move not only disrupted the electoral process but also cast doubt on the integrity of the commission. Political observers, such as Professor Samuel Conteh, believe that these tactics were a desperate attempt by the APC to regain power, indicating their lack of preparedness to effectively challenge President Julius Bio’s administration.
Sierra Leoneans, however, were not convinced by the APC’s rhetoric and tactics. The rejection of the party’s candidacy in the 2023 Presidential election reflects a broader sentiment that the APC has failed to present itself as a credible alternative. “The APC’s inability to offer viable solutions during their time as the opposition party has eroded public trust,” observes political commentator Fatmata Bangura. The people of Sierra Leone seek leadership that prioritizes national interests and demonstrates a genuine commitment to the country’s development.
In their recent press statements, the APC accused the judiciary of bias against them, attempting to portray themselves as victims of an unfair system. However, the reality paints a different picture. “Contrary to their claims, the APC has won more court cases than the ruling SLPP government,” reveals legal expert Joseph Williams. This contradiction exposes the APC’s attempt to manipulate public perception for their own gain.
The decision of the APC hierarchy to instruct their newly elected councilors, MPs, chairpersons, and mayors to abstain from participating in the governance process raises concerns about their true intentions. “This action showcases the party’s self-serving agenda,” emphasizes social commentator Aisha Conteh. By neglecting their responsibilities to the people they were elected to serve, the APC reveals a disheartening lack of commitment to Sierra Leone’s progress and development.
Sierra Leone’s advancement relies on political parties prioritizing national interests over personal or party agendas. The APC’s actions have hindered progress, disrupted unity, and prevented the nation from moving forward. It is imperative for all political actors to set aside their differences, collaborate, and work towards building a prosperous and harmonious Sierra Leone. Only through unity and collective efforts can the country reach its full potential.
