A three-day workshop aimed at advancing security sector reform concluded on July 15, 2025, in Freetown. The event, organized by UNDP Sierra Leone in partnership with ECOWAS and GIZ, brought together Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to strengthen their capacity for democratic oversight within the security sector.

The workshop provided a platform for robust dialogue and knowledge-sharing, equipping participants with the tools and strategies necessary to monitor, influence, and contribute to ongoing security sector reforms. Discussions underscored the vital role that civil society plays in promoting transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance within the security apparatus.

One of the key outcomes of the workshop was the development of a comprehensive roadmap to guide sustained engagement between CSOs and security institutions. This strategic document is expected to serve as a foundation for future collaboration and to enhance the influence of civil society in shaping reform efforts.

In addition, participants established a new CSO network dedicated to supporting security sector reform. The network aims to foster coordination, share best practices, and amplify civil society’s collective voice in advocating for systemic change. It will also serve as a hub for resources, dialogue, and joint initiatives.

The successful completion of the workshop marks a significant milestone in Sierra Leone’s journey toward democratic consolidation and accountable governance. By investing in the capacity of civil society, UNDP and its partners are helping to build a more resilient, transparent, and participatory security framework.

As Sierra Leone continues to navigate complex reform challenges, the active involvement of civil society will remain essential to ensuring inclusive and sustainable transformation within the security sector.
