The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sierra Leone, in collaboration with the UNV Regional Office for West and Central Africa, Youth in Climate Action, and dedicated community members, recently conducted a major coastal clean-up at Levuma Beach in Bendembu Community, Goderich a united call to Beat Plastic Pollution.
This initiative was more than a waste collection effort; it served as a powerful demonstration of community-led environmental protection, raising awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution while empowering young people to take ownership of their environment.
Over 50 youth volunteers and local residents participated in the three-hour clean-up, removing large quantities of plastic waste that routinely washes ashore during the rainy season much of it transported from other areas of Freetown.
Driven by youth leadership and a spirit of volunteerism, the event also introduced participants to opportunities available on the UN Volunteer platform, encouraging them to remain engaged in environmental advocacy and service.
With global plastic pollution projected to triple by 2060, the urgency for collective action has never been greater. The scenes at Levuma Beach are a stark reminder of the environmental crisis we face and the need for immediate and sustained efforts to protect our planet.
Together, through united actions like this, communities can make a tangible impact in the fight against plastic pollution.
