The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sierra Leone recently celebrated a significant milestone in Kambia, joining Hon. Conrad Sackey, Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, and the people of Kawula to mark the return of 70 girls to school.
This celebration is part of a larger initiative that has seen 2,500 girls across four districts return to the classroom this year, with 625 of them coming from Kambia District alone.
The girls’ return to school is made possible through a partnership between UNFPA Sierra Leone and the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, with support from the Irish Embassy in Freetown. This initiative aims to promote inclusive education and empower girls to pursue their dreams.
The event in Kambia highlighted the resilience and determination of the girls, as well as the dedication of teachers, communities, and partners who have worked tirelessly to ensure their return to school. It also underscored the critical role of education in shaping the future of girls and its contribution to sustainable development.
The UNDP, through its partnerships and initiatives, remains committed to supporting efforts that promote inclusive education and empower girls to reach their full potential. By working together, stakeholders can help create a future where every girl has the opportunity to learn, grow, and shape her own destiny.
In conclusion, the return of these girls to school marks a significant step toward achieving this goal and serves as a testament to what can be accomplished through collective effort and commitment.
