The engagement which took place on Friday, February 14, 2025, brought together representatives from political parties, civil society activists, the security sector and media practitioners to discuss the outcomes of the country’s previous multi-tier elections.
The activity is under the project titled “Localisation and Working Together for Peace: Support coalition members in holding various meetings to evaluate the 2023 election outcomes and document lessons learned”.
With a broader aim of strengthening peace and promoting cohesion in Sierra Leone, the project is funded by the United Nations Peace Building Fund (UNPBF) through World Vision.
Musa Sesay, the Head of the Development Studies Department at the University of Makeni, who facilitated the session delivered a succinct presentation, with a specific focus on the findings and recommendations of the Tripartite Committee Report.
Following his detailed presentation, participants were allocated to different groups and highlighted several solutions to prevent the recurrence of the violent incidents of the 2023 elections that threatened the country’s peace.
Both Ibrahim Alhaji Kamara, a coalition member of the Women’s Peace & Security, and Councillor Suard Henrietta Koroma of the Bombali District Council described the engagement as an “eye-opener”.
Kamara stressed the need for the timely implementation of key recommendations of the Tripartite Committee, especially the publication of documents by the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone to promote and uphold transparency and accountability.
Councillor Koroma indicated the country needs several legal reforms to end violence in the subsequent elections.
