In recognition of his pivotal role in ending Sierra Leone’s 11-year civil war and his continued dedication to peace and national security, the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) has officially recognized Chief Alhaji Aiah Sansie Quigba, Speaker of the Gbane Kandor Chiefdom, as National Security Adviser to the Office of National Security (ONS).

This recognition followed a recent visit by UNAMSIL to the Fourah Bay College Archives Department, where records highlighting Chief Quigba’s significant contributions during and after the civil war were reviewed. Based on those findings, UNAMSIL officially acknowledged his role in the capacity of National Security Adviser.

According to reports, Chief Quigba is one of the longest-serving members of the Kono District Security Committee (DISEC) a key post-conflict peacebuilding structure under the Office of National Security. A formal recognition letter from UNAMSIL’s Public Information Office in Freetown described Chief Quigba as a respected figure in both Kono District and the nation, widely known for his role during the civil conflict and his efforts in sustaining peace afterward.

The correspondence outlined several key contributions of Chief Alhaji Aiah Sansie Quigba.

Chief Quigba’s leadership and community-driven initiatives have had a lasting influence in Kono and beyond. His commitment to peace, development, and social cohesion continues to be celebrated by the people of Sierra Leone.

As the leader of the Civil Defence Forces (CDF) Donsos a traditional hunter group that collaborated with government forces Chief Quigba was instrumental in peacekeeping and disarmament efforts in Kono. He represented the CDF in high-level peacekeeping dialogues with the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), senior UNAMSIL officers, and other stakeholders.

In an exclusive interview, Chief Alhaji Aiah Sansie Quigba expressed deep gratitude to UNAMSIL for the recognition. “Gone are the days when the good or evil that men do lives after them; now, it lives with them,” he remarked, reflecting on the enduring impact of one’s actions.

He also recounted how he once turned down a monetary reward offered in Guinea for military assistance, opting instead to remain focused on helping end the war in Sierra Leone. “Without peace, there is no such thing as development,” he stated, reaffirming his continued support for peace and security efforts in Kono District and across the country.

Chief Quigba concluded by saying that the recognition fulfils him, but also motivates him to do more: “The reward for hard work is more work.”

This recognition by UNAMSIL serves as both a tribute to Chief Quigba’s legacy and a reminder of the enduring importance of grassroots leadership in peace-building and national development.
