In a remarkable act of generosity ahead of Eid al-Adha, Ummah Welfare Trust (UWT) has distributed thousands of full bags of rice to students enrolled in its Kataateeb Islamic education programme across Sierra Leone, bringing much-needed relief to families during a challenging economic period.

The nationwide distribution, which began on May 30 and extended into early June 2025, targeted students in both Freetown and rural provinces. Each beneficiary received a 50kg bag of rice at designated collection points a gesture widely praised by parents and local observers as timely and compassionate.

“This means a lot to us, especially in these challenging times,” said one grateful parent. “May Allah bless Ummah Welfare Trust for remembering us for the sake of Allah.”

This latest food aid initiative builds upon a series of ongoing welfare activities led by the UK-based charity. Recently, UWT also provided Eid gifts of 290,000 Leones to each student in its programme, reinforcing its reputation as one of the leading faith-based humanitarian organizations operating in Sierra Leone.

Founded in 2001, Ummah Welfare Trust delivers humanitarian assistance in more than 14 countries, with operations deeply rooted in Islamic principles of compassion, generosity, and community support*. In Sierra Leone, the charity has consistently worked to alleviate poverty and improve access to education particularly for children in disadvantaged communities.

Through its Kataateeb programme, UWT offers free, high-quality Islamic education to children across the country. The initiative equips students with uniforms, madrasah bags, learning materials, and access to regular examinations. Outstanding students are recognized and rewarded with special gifts, encouraging academic excellence and spiritual growth.

The programme also supports teachers through continuous training and monitoring, ensuring that both educational and moral instruction adhere to the highest standards. The ultimate goal is to nurture a generation of youth who are guided by revelation, grounded in reality, and prepared to carry forward the legacy of the Prophets.

With food insecurity continuing to affect many households in Sierra Leone, UWT’s rice distribution provides critical support to families facing daily hardships. Beyond physical sustenance, the initiative also embodies the Islamic values of compassion, community service, and shared responsibility.

As the sacred days of Dhul Hijjah unfold, Ummah Welfare Trust’s charitable work serves as a powerful example of faith in action transforming lives, uplifting communities, and shaping the future of Islamic tarbiyyah, one student at a time.
