The United States Chargé d’Affaires, Jared M. Yancey, on Tuesday visited Bo District for high-level meetings with local authorities, reinforcing U.S. commitment to strengthening partnerships at the subnational level and pledged to support governance and economic growth.

During the visit, Chargé Yancey held separate discussions with District Council Chairman Victor Hindowa Korseh and Bo City Mayor Kobba Musa. The engagements highlighted a diplomatic push to deepen cooperation with local governments in Sierra Leone.

In his discussions, Yancey emphasized the United States’ interest in supporting strong local institutions capable of delivering essential services, promoting lawful trade, and attracting investment. According to a U.S. mission statement, such engagements are part of a broader strategy to ensure that U.S. assistance remains responsive to community needs while strengthening the role of local authorities in national development.

“These conversations with local leaders are essential to making U.S. engagement targeted and effective. Working directly with those who shape security, economic growth, and governance on the ground helps deliver real results for both our countries,” the statement noted.

Chairman Korseh and Mayor Musa outlined key priority areas for collaboration, including strengthening local governance capacity, improving municipal service delivery, and supporting initiatives that stimulate small business growth and expand market access.

Discussions also addressed public safety concerns, with local authorities requesting technical and institutional support to enhance community policing and improve coordination with national security agencies.

Local stakeholders welcomed the visit, describing it as a strong recognition of Bo’s importance in regional stability and economic development. Community leaders noted that strengthened partnerships with international actors could help drive progress in infrastructure, sanitation, and small-scale enterprise development.

The U.S. delegation indicated that follow-up actions may include technical assistance, capacity-building programmes for council staff, and support for initiatives aimed at formalising trade practices. These efforts are expected to promote lawful commerce and reduce vulnerabilities that could undermine security and development.

Observers noted that the focus on subnational engagement reflects a growing trend in development diplomacy, which prioritizes strengthening governance at the municipal level to achieve sustainable outcomes.

The visit concluded with commitments from both sides to maintain dialogue and explore practical programmes aligned with the development priorities identified by Bo’s leadership.
