Kono District, Sierra Leone, A tragic road accident at Njagbema Junction in Nimikoro Chiefdom has claimed the life of Chief Aiah Barbam, the town chief of Bakidu, on what was supposed to be his wedding day.

According to Sergeant 9770 Amara B., attached to the Traffic Department at the Motema Police Divisional Headquarters, the fatal collision involved two unregistered motorbikes. The deceased reportedly asked his nephew to escort him on a motorbike to the wedding ceremony.

While traveling in the same direction, Sgt. Amara explained, the nephew who was leading attempted a U-turn without giving any signal, resulting in a collision with the motorbike following closely behind. Chief Aiah Barbam died from his injuries, while the two riders sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Koidu Government Hospital.

“The accident is under investigation, but unfortunately, both unregistered motorbikes involved are still at large,” Sgt. Amara said.

The remains of Chief Barbam were released to his family following a postmortem examination at the hospital. He has since been laid to rest.

Police reports indicate a rising number of road accidents in the Motema Police Division, many caused by illegal U-turns and violations of traffic laws.

A grieving family member, speaking through tears, said the loss is devastating.

“He left to buy drinks for the wedding ceremony and never returned. We still can’t believe he’s gone.”

The untimely death of Chief Aiah Barbam has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a joyous occasion, highlighting the urgent need for road safety enforcement in rural areas across Sierra Leone.
