The Minister of Agriculture and Food Secirity, Dr. Abu Bakarr Karim has said that things are working well with the Sierra Leone Regional Rice Value Chain Project in Torma Bum, Bonthe District and that three thousand hectares of rice are about to be harvested.
Dr. Karim added that the project site has received the generators for the installation of the biggest mill to supply the area adequate electricity for the direct benefit of the project beneficiaries noting that the project stands to create jobs and promote food security that is why it is effectively monitored by the Ministry to see the desired result.
He emphasized that Torma Bum is just one area where project hinging on food security is being implemented noting that millions of Dollars go towards the importation of rice being the staple food annually adding that with the plans put in place by government , things will be better in so far as rice sufficiency is concerned.
Launching the Regional Rice Value Chain Project in Torma Bum on Friday 11th June, 2021, President Bio said food security is the most critical pillar in achieving government’s human capital development priorities for the country.
This project directly benefits 7,000 women and youth farmers, along with 35,000 farming families who grow rice on 35,000 hectares of farmlands.
