Timber Theft:  Military Officer Narrates Ordeal

 Captain Alpha Mahmoud Jalloh a military officer residing in Wilberforce, Freetown, has on Friday the 26th day of May 2023 testified against 26 years old Abdulraham Kamara on a case of theft.

Taking the witness stand, Mr Jalloh said he knew the accused as his neighbour, and at his said address mentioned above were building materials such as boards, metal bars, and full-length cilotext he observed that some of the materials were missing.

The witness added that on the said date of the incident, he came out of his room at around 4 to 5 in the evening, he saw the accused jumping from his store room where the materials were kept to the street and ran off, for a better confirmation I called his name Alhaji as I used to call him, he then answered and said he is coming, I saw him holding the boards with his hands,” he narrated.

Mr Jalloh concluded that at around 6 to 7 he then went to the grandmother of the accused Mafinda and told her about the incident, and she confirmed that the accused had just stolen from her also. He told the court that at night he saw the accused at Wilberforce barracks, the following day he and some youths went in search of him and he was found at a place used for smoking kush, and later took him to the Congo Cross Police Station where he made a statement.

At this point, the accused cross-examined the witness:

” Did you see me at your place?” the witness said yes and that he even called him by his name.

“Who told you I went to take stone at your place” Mr Jalloh answered you did yourself.

The accused further put it to the witness that he had grudge against him on land issues, in which the matter was brought before Magistrate Mark Ngeba.

The accused is before Magistrate Alpha Rashid Jalloh of Pademba Road Court No. 4 facing a one-count indictment of Larceny contrary to section 2 of the Larceny Act of 1916.

It was alleged that the accused Abdulrahman Kamara, on Monday the 22nd May 2023, at no 15b water side Wilberforce barracks, stole twenty-five (25) full-length cilotext each value forty-five leones ( Nle 45) valued one thousand one hundred and twenty-five Leones ( Nle 1,125), eight iron bars each value eight hundred leones ( Nle 800) value six thousand and four hundred leones ( Nle 6,400) and thirty-three leones of timber each value fifty leones ( Nle 50) value one thousand six hundred and fifty leones ( Nle 1,650) all to the total value of nine thousand one hundred and seventy-five Leone ( Nle 9, 175) property of Alpha Mamud Jalloh.

The matter is been prosecuted by Sergeant 1462 Amiza John, whilst the accused is unrepresented.

When the charges were read and put to him the accused pleaded not guilty.

Bail was refused and the matter was adjourned to the 1st of June 2023, for Pw2 to testify.
