In a jubilant and emotional homecoming, the people of Taninahun Village, Bumpeh Gao Chiefdom, Bo District, turned out in large numbers on Saturday, May 10, 2025, to celebrate their native son, Chief John Abu, following his recent appointment by President Julius Maada Bio as the Resident Minister for the Southern Region.
The event, held at the village barry (gathering hall), marked Chief Abu’s first official visit to his hometown since assuming the ministerial role. The welcome ceremony featured vibrant cultural performances, prayers, speeches, and a strong expression of hope for renewed development in the chiefdom.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Abu expressed heartfelt thanks to his people for their warm welcome and continued support. He also extended his gratitude to President Bio for the trust placed in him. “This is a moment of pride and responsibility. I feel truly humbled and inspired to serve diligently,” he stated.
Responding to a moving appeal by Women’s Leader Mrs. Rachel Kamanda—who highlighted the lack of trained teachers and the village’s zero percent pass rate in the 2024 NPSE Chief Abu described the situation as both alarming and unacceptable. He pledged to engage the appropriate authorities to find urgent solutions, reaffirming the government’s commitment to quality education for all.
The event drew several local leaders and SLPP dignitaries. Acting Town Chief Mohamed Joe and Acting Section Chief Alieu Abu led the introductions and prayers, respectively, while community members reaffirmed their unity and loyalty to both Chief Abu and the government.
Hon. Charles Osman Abdulai, representing Bo District, commended President Bio for appointing a local son to a key leadership position. He urged the people to collaborate closely with Chief Abu to foster meaningful development in the area.
SLPP District Secretary General Foday Abdulai, Financial Secretary Francis Bangalie, and aspiring Secretary General Lawyer Mornya Sheriff all praised the strong community turnout and enthusiasm. They encouraged continued support for the Resident Minister in his new role.
Youth Leader Joseph Songu used the occasion to advocate for concrete development projects such as the construction of a school and a medical center. He referenced President Bio’s 2012 campaign visit to the village, describing Chief Abu’s appointment as a fulfilled promise and a critical opportunity for lasting change.
Veteran community leader Mr. Ibrahim Kabineh Kawa applauded Chief Abu’s leadership qualities and called on the community to support him through patience and prayer, while managing expectations realistically.
The ceremony concluded with renewed optimism, as Taninahun rallied behind one of its own, united in the hope of a brighter, more prosperous future.
