A delegation from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), based at the Regional Headquarters in Dakar, Senegal, met with the Inspector General of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), Mr. William Fayia Sellu, to explore a proposed partnership aimed at enhancing the capacity of the national police force in Kingtom Police Barracks, Freetown on April 23, 2025.
Kenneth Broch Ford, head of the HSI delegation, outlined the agency’s core focus areas, including combatting organized crime such as drug and human trafficking, money laundering, counterfeit pharmaceuticals, and cybercrime. He expressed a strong willingness to support the SLP through tailored training programs that would help strengthen crime prevention and modern law enforcement practices in Sierra Leone.
Inspector General Sellu warmly welcomed the proposal, stressing the critical importance of capacity building within the force. “What’s paramount to me is training, because crime is changing its face on a daily basis,” he said, noting that emerging threats demand updated skills and specialized knowledge.
IGP Sellu also raised concerns about the growing presence of scams in the country, particularly the widespread QNET scam. He emphasized the need for focused training to effectively detect and disrupt such fraudulent activities.
Reaffirming his commitment to the partnership, IGP Sellu highlighted the potential national benefits of working closely with HSI to boost the effectiveness and professionalism of the SLP. The meeting concluded with a symbolic group photo, underscoring the mutual commitment to strengthening law enforcement and building a safer Sierra Leone.
