Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL) has strengthened its collaboration with traditional and local authorities in the Eastern Region as part of ongoing preparations for the 2026 Population and Housing Census.
During a regional stakeholders’ engagement held on 17th October 2025 at the Kenema District Council Hall, paramount chiefs, district officials, and community leaders pledged their full support for the cartographic mapping exercise, which forms the foundation of the upcoming national census.
Statistician General Andrew Bob Johnny described the mapping process as “the cornerstone of a credible census,” emphasizing its importance in guiding national planning, equitable resource allocation, and informed policy decisions.
“We are laying the groundwork for data that will shape Sierra Leone’s development priorities for the next decade,” he stated.
Representing the National Council of Paramount Chiefs, Paramount Chief Fayia S.B. Sovula reaffirmed traditional leaders’ commitment to mobilizing their communities for full participation. This pledge was echoed by PC Sadie Kapuwa (Kenema), PC Soloko (Kono), and PC Kelly Coomber (Kailahun), all of whom expressed readiness to lead local efforts in support of the census.
Abdulai Salia Brima, Director of Censuses and GIS, provided insight into the technical aspects of the mapping process, explaining that it ensures every household and settlement across the country is identified, which is vital for delivering an inclusive and credible census.
Deputy Statistician General Lansana Kpewolo Kanneh announced that the pilot census will be conducted in December 2025, and he commended the government and development partners for their support of Stats SL’s initiatives.
Dr. Foluke Adebayor, a Cartographic Consultant, highlighted the use of advanced technologies, such as satellite imagery and digital data collection tools, to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of the mapping process.
To support community sensitization efforts, Stats SL distributed megaphones and logistical materials to sixteen paramount chiefs to aid in raising public awareness about the census.
The engagement concluded with a joint pledge from all participants to ensure the success of Census 2026. Stats SL reiterated its commitment to transparency, inclusiveness, and national coverage throughout the entire process.
The next regional stakeholders’ meeting is scheduled to take place in the North-West Region.
