On June 14, 2025, Sierra Leone, under the leadership of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio, took a significant step toward strengthening its energy security. The country’s Energy Sector Lead, Hon. Alhaji Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, acting on the President’s directive, successfully brokered a power purchase agreement with Guinea’s Minister of Energy, Hydropower, and Hydrocarbons, Aboubacar Camara.

This strategic partnership will supply an additional 10 megawatts (MW) of base-load electricity to Freetown, Sierra Leone’s capital. The agreement comes at a critical moment, as the current energy deal with Turkish provider Karpowership nears its end, raising concerns about a potential power shortfall.

Dr. Yumkella’s diplomatic engagement highlights his commitment to ensuring a reliable, accessible, and affordable electricity supply for the capital. The deal not only addresses Sierra Leone’s immediate energy needs but also aligns with its long-term goals of energy independence and economic resilience.

Furthermore, this initiative forms a key component of Mission 300, a continent-wide strategy aimed at promoting cross-border energy trade. As one of the champions of Mission 300, Dr. Yumkella advocates for improved resource utilization and the creation of integrated energy markets across Africa.

This collaboration between Sierra Leone and Guinea demonstrates the power of regional cooperation in achieving sustainable energy solution
