The Ministry of Sports has over weekend engaged its staff, sports associations, and sports administrators on a week-long retreat to chat the way forward on how to foster sports development, administrative knowledge, and the importance of the civil service towards ensuring the government’s goals.
This year’s theme was “Strengthening Sports Governance for Peace and Development”. It was chosen as a way of marking the symbolic milestone of the Ministry of Sports so far.
The opening session of the retreat was climaxed with a statement by the Director of Sports, Haroun M. Korgie, Permanent Secretary S.O.Z Alghalie, Deputy Minister of Sports, Kai Lawrence M’bayo. The keynote presentation was done by the Minister of Sports, Ibrahim Nyelenkeh.
Minister Nyelenkeh expressed his thanks and appreciation to the staff of the Ministry of Sports and association representatives for making it possible to attend the retreat. He further encouraged them to take the retreat very seriously and to make contributions as and when necessary.
The Minister further explained the importance of the retreat and why the said retreat was taken to the province. “We all have a role to play and that is the reason for the retreat”, he said.
He continued by saying that the retreat will give a clear understanding of staff roles and contributions towards sports development. “That’s the reason we chose Makeni so we can have a level and interactive sessions; where top to bottom can dialogue and chat the way forward”, Minister Nyelenkeh added.
Presentation and facilitation from various sporting administrators and government Ministries such as Human Resources Management Office (HRMO) and Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED), to name but a few, with various topics including goals and targets setting, football and sports governance, effective collaboration and communications between sporting bodies, roles and functions of the Director of Sports, code of ethics and secrecy in the civil service, and conflict resolution.
Sports has been an integral instrument used in many facets, and the Ministry of Sports through the leadership of the Minister, Ibrahim Nyelenkeh has been able to unite the football family, ensuring the resumption of our local league and the qualification of the National Team Leones Stars to the just concluded AFCON 2021 in Cameroon.
The Permanent Secretary, S.O.Z Alghalie expressed his satisfaction, describing the process as ‘a step to the new guide of sports management” whilst hoping that staff and football administrators will be able to use the retreat to transform their work and associations.
