In a move aimed at enhancing transparency and improving the quality of parliamentary reporting, the Speaker of the Parliament of Sierra Leone, Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, has issued a directive requiring that all parliamentary oversight visits include members of the Parliamentary Press Gallery (PPG-SL).

The announcement was made during a recent parliamentary session, where the Speaker emphasized the vital role of the Press Gallery in shaping accurate public understanding of parliamentary work. Hon. Thomas highlighted that journalists affiliated with Parliament possess a deeper knowledge of legislative procedures and oversight functions compared to external media practitioners, making them better suited to convey the true nature of parliamentary activities to the public.

“Please, when you go on oversight, involve members of the Press Gallery,” the Speaker urged committee heads. “They know our work and have been with us. They can report better than journalists from outside.”

This directive comes at a time when Parliament is seeking to bolster public trust by increasing visibility and demonstrating accountability. By actively involving PPG-SL journalists in oversight activities, the Speaker hopes to ensure that accurate, timely, and comprehensive information is shared with citizens.

Hon. Thomas also encouraged Parliamentary Committees to work closely with Paramount Chiefs and local authorities during district-level oversight visits. He stressed the importance of inclusive governance and community participation in strengthening the democratic process.

Members of the Parliamentary Press Gallery have welcomed the Speaker’s directive, viewing it as recognition of their dedicated service and expertise in covering legislative affairs.

This initiative is expected to enhance civic engagement, foster responsible governance, and build greater public confidence by enabling the media to report firsthand on the management of public funds and the implementation of development projects.

As Parliament prepares for its upcoming oversight missions, the impact of this inclusive approach on transparency and public trust will be closely watched.
