Solidaridad, in collaboration with key stakeholders, concluded a momentous two-day national validation policy workshop aimed at strategizing the implementation plan for the oil palm value chain. The event, held on November 15-16, 2023, at the esteemed Sierra Palm Resort Hotel in Aberdeen, Freetown, garnered participation from government bodies, agency departments, private sector partners, various institutions, oil palm producers, farmers, civil society organizations, media representatives, and cooperatives.
During the workshop, Aiah J Thorlie, the acting Director-General of the Ministry of Agriculture, highlighted the longstanding absence of a comprehensive policy governing the oil palm industry despite its historical significance. He expressed gratitude towards Solidaridad for spearheading the development of a much-needed policy framework spanning the entire value chain of the oil palm sector.
Thorlie emphasized the Ministry’s concerted efforts in addressing this critical gap but acknowledged that these endeavors had been somewhat directionless. He underlined the broader significance of oil palm beyond being one of the oldest commodities, emphasizing its pivotal role as one of the key components within the broader framework of Sierra Leone’s development strategies, particularly within the “big five.”
Moreover, he extended a commitment on behalf of the Ministry to actively support Solidaridad’s initiatives, offering technical expertise and guidance throughout the implementation process. Thorlie stressed that “Feed Salone” isn’t solely centered around rice but encompasses various essential sectors, with oil palm holding a crucial position within this framework.
The workshop’s success marks a significant milestone in formulating a comprehensive policy that aims to harness the potential of the oil palm industry while aligning with broader national developmental objectives. The collaboration between Solidaridad and diverse stakeholders signifies a step forward in strengthening Sierra Leone’s agricultural landscape and fostering sustainable growth within the oil palm sector.
