The Ministry of Social Welfare has successfully discharged 50 individuals from the Gondama Rehabilitation Camp, following two months of intensive therapy and support. The initiative marks a significant step toward youth empowerment and national efforts to combat drug abuse in Sierra Leone.

The discharged individuals are now set to reintegrate into their communities as ambassadors of positive change, equipped with the tools and skills to contribute meaningfully to society.

Speaking at the official discharge ceremony, Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Karminty, stressed the urgency of tackling substance abuse, particularly among the youth.

“This is a crucial time for every Sierra Leonean to prioritize their well-being by steering clear of harmful substances such as kush, tramadol, ecstasy, and molly,” she stated.

Her remarks reflected the government’s commitment to creating a healthier and more resilient society amid the rising threat of drug addiction.

The Ministry’s approach, centered on rehabilitation and reintegration, is part of a broader strategy to address the escalating rates of drug consumption in the country. According to civil society organizations, a significant proportion of Sierra Leone’s youth are engaged in drug use, which poses serious challenges to social stability and economic progress.

The 50 individuals who completed the rehabilitation program received counseling, life skills training, and support to aid their transition. The Ministry also pledged continued assistance, including access to educational opportunities and employment pathways, to ensure long-term recovery and reintegration.

This initiative is more than a response to addiction it represents a cultural shift toward drug-free living and community empowerment. By helping these individuals recover and thrive, the government hopes to inspire others to reject substance abuse and embrace healthier, more productive lifestyles.

As Sierra Leone confronts the growing challenge of youth drug addiction, the Ministry of Social Welfare’s rehabilitation program stands as a proactive and hopeful step toward national healing and transformation. With sustained community involvement and civil society support, the country moves closer to building a safer, more empowered future for its younger generations.
