The Ministry of Social Welfare, in collaboration with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, has distributed bags of rice to several disability organizations in Freetown. The initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to alleviate food insecurity among vulnerable groups.
Despite heavy rains over the weekend, Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Karminty, accompanied by the Commissioner of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Brima Sheriff, visited and delivered supplies to organizations including HEPPO at Pademba Road, House of Jesus at the Bus Station, HYDA Association at ECOWAS Street, and the Wilberforce Street Association.
According to officials, the distribution aimed to ease the hardships faced by persons with disabilities particularly during the rainy season, when mobility becomes more difficult.
Minister Karminty conveyed greetings from President Julius Maada Bio and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the welfare of persons with disabilities. She emphasized that her role goes beyond administration, stating that she sees herself as “a mother to advocate for their needs and ensure inclusivity in national development.”
Commissioner Sheriff highlighted that the initiative is in line with President Bio’s broader agenda of inclusivity and social protection. He called on disability groups to remain united and patient as the government develops long-term strategies to improve their well-being.
Representatives of the beneficiary organizations, some visibly emotional, expressed deep gratitude to Minister Karminty and President Bio. They praised the government for its continued support, especially during difficult times.
