The Sierra Leone Wrestling Association (SLWA) has embarked on a comprehensive foundational rebuild of the sport, with newly appointed Technical Director Jamal Jaffa identifying grassroots development as the cornerstone of wrestling’s future in the country.

Speaking on his vision, Jaffa emphasized that sustainable success can only be achieved through early talent identification and structured training at school and community levels. “The future of wrestling lies in building a strong foundation at school and community levels,” he stated, highlighting the importance of nurturing young athletes and equipping them with both technical skills and the mental discipline required for international competition.

Under Jaffa’s leadership, the SLWA plans to introduce systematic development programmes aimed at producing technically sound, mentally resilient, and competitively prepared wrestlers. His approach combines strict technical standards with mentorship, designed to instill discipline, confidence, and a winning mindset among emerging athletes.

Jaffa’s appointment is widely seen as a strategic move by the SLWA’s new executive, reflecting a renewed commitment to revitalize the sport after years of limited progress. Wrestling stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that the new technical direction will usher in an era of structured coaching, improved performance, and heightened competitiveness.

With a clear grassroots-focused strategy taking shape, the SLWA aims to reposition Sierra Leone as a formidable force in African wrestling, with ambitions for consistent representation and success on the continental and global stage.
