The Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) has held its regional executive elections past Saturday and has proceeded to its Delegate Conference where the Presidency of the Union will be elected on Tuesday 13th December 2022 in Freetown.

The Union holds its delegates conference after every four years maintaining its presence in four regions. Over two hundred delegates are expected to grace the conference from 12th to 13th.

According to the Regional Secretary, West, Foday Kuyateh, the Union has one hundred branches all over the country to take part in the conference. “We are coming before our teachers, our membership to report to them how the Union is being run, the success story and the challenges”, Kuyateh said, adding that every delegate has right to vote and be voted for in this week’s delegate conference.

What is expected to be topical in the conference has to do with salary increment for teachers as government battles with the current economic situation.

It could be recalled that SLTU had demanded from the Government of Sierra Leone 195% salary increment for teachers but the government has not been able to meet this demand instead it made commitment for 45% salary increment in three years.

However, each teacher pays the sum of 13 Leones (NLE) as monthly contribution to the Union which grumbles that more resources are needed to run the affairs of the SLTU.
