SLP RECORDS 4156 ACCIDENTS COUNTRY WIDE IN 2021

In a  presser held by the Sierra Leone Police at its George Street Headquarters, the Director of Traffic Management and Road Safety AIG Kaprie S. Kamara has on Friday the  7th of January 2022, disclosed to journalists that the country recorded 4156 cases of road crashes  country wide from 1st January 2021 to 31 December 2021.

“So we have to summarize the road accidents for motor vehicles, motor cycles, tricycles and bicycles that occurred from the 1st January to the 31st of December 2021 which are 4156 cases country wide”, he said.

AIG Kamara categorized that the total number of  fatalities for the entire country for both male and female were 362 cases, grand total for serious accident nationwide were 930 cases, slight injuries  2292 cases nationwide,  passengers who were injured were 1536 cases, cases involving  pedestrians constitutes  1048 and drivers/riders involved in those accident account for 1000.

Quantifying the causes of the accidents,  the Director  of Traffic Management and Road Safety  also disclosed that,  Human factor  accounts for 3627 cases, Mechanical factor 445 and environmental factor accounts for 84 cases.

AIG Kamara classified the accidents by region of which Freetown West Region recorded 695 cases of road crashes. He added that the fatality rate of those cases were 13 males and five females.  He also disclosed that the serious nature of injuries for males were 57 and 42 for females.

He furthered that Slight injuries sustained in the Freetown West Region constitute 123 for male and 56 for female.

He equally categorized that 88 passengers were injured in those accidents, 166 pedestrians injured, and 42 drivers also injured in the Freetown West Region.  He disclosed that 593 accidents in the Freetown West Region were caused by human factors, 94 cases caused due to mechanical factor and accident  8 cases of road crashes due to  environmental  factors.

AIG Kaprie Kamara continued that the Sierra Leone Police also recorded 992 cases of road accidents for Freetown East, 91 cases for North-West Region, 76 cases North-East, 58 cases for Southern Region, and 363 cases of road crashes in the Eastern Region.

He reaffirmed that a total number 2275 cases were recorded as fatality across the nation, and for fatality, 703 cases of passengers who were injured, 522 pedestrians were equally injured and 310 drivers injured with a total of 1535 cases recorded for that category.  He concluded by also disclosing that  1909 cases of accidents nationwide occurred due to Human factor, 311  cases due to  mechanical factor, and 55 cases caused by  environmental factor  bringing to a total of 2275 cases recorded caused by the above mentioned factors.
