In a significant development aimed at addressing systemic issues within the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), the Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, announced the establishment of an Interim Oversight Team to oversee the institution’s operations. This decision follows recommendations from the Anti-Corruption Commission, which recently concluded investigations and reviewed SLBC’s operations.
Minister Bah confirmed that the Interim Oversight Team, led by Dr. Joe Nyuma, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, would assume responsibility until the appointment of a new Director General, Ms. Josephine Kamara, pending parliamentary confirmation.
During a Town Hall meeting with SLBC staff on February 13th, Minister Bah expressed gratitude for their patience and understanding throughout the investigation period. He underscored the government’s commitment to transforming SLBC into a leading national broadcaster aligned with 21st-century standards.
The Minister also announced the initiation of the process to nominate a new board of directors, mandated by the SLBC Act. He assured that President Julius Maada Bio would soon appoint a new board to oversee the institution’s affairs.
In response, SLBC staff commended the Ministry for conducting a fair and thoughtful review process. They pledged their support to the interim leadership and expressed determination to collaborate for the successful tenure of the new Director General.
This overhaul marks a pivotal moment in SLBC’s journey towards transparency, accountability, and modernization, reflecting the government’s unwavering commitment to fostering a robust media environment in Sierra Leone.
