The Sierra Leone Scrabble national team on Wednesday in Accra, Ghana finished second behind the World Superpower Nigeria to grabbed Silver medal as Gambia and host Ghana finished in third and fourth position in the Maiden edition of West Africa Scrabble Championship respectively.

Mohamed Alieu Kamara, Patrick Hamilton Drape- and Emmanuel excel in day three to climax the championship. Mohamed Alieu Kamara- who finished in 20th position out of 28 games played  won 14 and lost 14 with a spread of 174 while Emmanuel King who finished in 26th position also won 13 and lost 15 with a spread of +531.

Meanwhile, Patrick Hamilton Drape- who started off well in day one finished in 28th having won 13 and lost 15 with a spread of -70. Yusuf Koroma- attained 31st position winning 13   and lost 15 with a spread of -964.

The West Africa Scrabble Championship featured 4 countries and 44 players; Nigeria represented by 16 players to win the WASC Country Trophy.

The three-event also saw nine Nigerians in first to 9th positions in the overall individual ranking at the championship.

Nigerian Eta Karo has been crowned as tournament’s player having collected the sum of $ 3000 and trophy.

Speaking after the championship, Sierra Leone President, Christian Asgill congratulated the team for their achievements at this year’s event.

He said: “I’m proud of the team because this is Sierra Leone’s first medal in an international Scrabble Championship”, he said.

“I’m so proud because this was achieved under my leadership” Asgill thanked Rokel Commercial Bank and Mercury International Lottery for this historic achievement.

He said: “Without these two institutions we could not have achieved this success”, and called on the government and corporate institutions to come on board in funding the association in this year’s Africa Scrabble Championship, which will be hosted in Zambia in November.
