The Sierra Leone Taekwondo Association has commenced its School projects for pupils in Freetown to help popularize the Sports. It is also meant to tap new talents within the age brackets of 14, 15 and 20 years, A-Z Sports has gathered.
According to the President of the Association, Oness Abayomi Johnson, “this was a decision taken by the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone that the Association should take the sport to Schools and tap new talents in the country for better future representation.”
The Association started its operation at the Annie Walsh Memorial Secondary School where they have already established a club and have some pupils who are committed to learning such discipline.
The President of the Association said the sports has three advantages; one it is a combat Sports that will help the girls in terms of self defense when faced physical attacks; it will help someone to build his or her body physique to respond to aggressions from armed robbers, and it help someone to able to overcome certain sicknesses that may affect the body.
When the Association visited the Annie Walsh Memorial Secondary School the Principle and her Vice warmly welcomed them to teach the pupils the sporting discipline. Two days has been extended to pupils to learn Taekwondo.
The Association has targeted five Schools namely the Zulaka International School, International Academy, Methods Girl high School, FSSG and the United Methods Church Secondary school.
The Association is currently preparing for the Olympic Games that are sets to take place in Japan this year, July 2021. The President disclosed that someone has already qualified for the Olympic games, but currently based in Holland, where he is embarking on an intensive training for the World show pic.
In another development, the Association has received its calendar of activities for 2021. This event is set to take place in China where eight Local Taekwondo athletes will be representing the Country.
Sierra Leone Taekwondo Association had participated in many sporting events both locally and internationally and this year the President of the Association is optimistic of winning golden medals.
