A new era of energy transformation is unfolding in Sierra Leone as the country secures a landmark $2.2 billion endorsement for its Mission 300 Energy Compact the most ambitious energy infrastructure plan in the nation’s history.

Announced at the Bloomberg Global Forum 2025, this milestone signals a major step forward in Sierra Leone’s drive for sustainable development and energy security. The initiative is backed by key international partners, including the World Bank Group and the African Development Bank (AfDB).

At the core of the compact is a bold vision to expand national electricity access from 36% to 78%, leveraging renewable energy generation, modernized transmission and distribution systems, and clean cooking solutions.

President Julius Maada Bio, who also serves as Minister of Energy, described the compact as “groundbreaking” and “the most ambitious and comprehensive energy infrastructure initiative ever developed for Sierra Leone.”

The compact emphasizes evidence-based planning and data-driven decision-making, aiming to unlock new opportunities for inclusive and sustainable development.

The Mission 300 initiative a joint effort by the World Bank and AfDB seeks to provide electricity access to 300 million people across Africa by 2030. Sierra Leone is one of 18 African countries to receive endorsement under this initiative, underscoring its commitment to both regional collaboration and global climate goals.

With this endorsement, Sierra Leone is expected to attract significant investment, drive economic growth, and improve quality of life for millions of its citizens. While challenges remain, the nation stands poised to harness the power of energy to fuel its development aspirations.

As Sierra Leone takes bold steps toward a brighter energy future, the world watches with anticipation, hopeful for the transformative impact this historic compact will deliver.
