The National Scrabble Association of Sierra Leone (NSASL) will hold its National Scrabble Championship at the Amusemnet Complex (Victoria Park) on the 14th and 15th day of January 2023.

Twenty Scrabble players are sets to compete in the National Championship, which will also serve as qualifiers for the World Scrabble Championship to be held later this year in Las Vegas, USA.

Sierra Leone foreign-based Scribbler Mohamed Alieu Kamara arrived on Tuesday from England to battle for Championship on Saturday and Sunday.

Mohamed Alieu Kamara, Emmanuel King Esq, Patrick Drape- Hamilton, Ishmael Sesay, Yusuf Koroma, Ibrahim Conteh, Abdul Borbor Kamara have all represented Sierra Leone in both the Africa and World Scrabble Championships.

President of the National Scrabble Association of Sierra Leone Christian Asgill said that Scrabble followers should expect a very tough challenge among players, adding that top players across the country have indicated desire to dethrone the previous champions Emmanuel King and Christian Asgill.

He said the Africa Scrabble Championship in Zambia has lifted the players’ morale ahead of the World (2023) and Africa Championships. He said that the players would not rest on their oars “because they should expect a tough championship”. Sierra Leone will host the Africa Championship next year in Freetown for the first time and the President Christian Asgill has called on players to double their efforts to defend their mother land come October 2024.

He said: “This Championship will serve as turning point ahead of the World and Africa Championships to be hosted in USA and Sierra Leone,” he told CTN Sports.

“Our preparation start now and we are encouraging school going pupils especially the girls to come on board to make Sierra Leone a proud Scrabble nation”, Asgill said.
