The Global Peace Index (GPI) has ranked Sierra Leone as the 57th most peaceful nation in the world in its 2025 “Peace Report,” marking a significant improvement from its 66th position in 2024. This update was announced in a press release dated Thursday, June 26, 2025, by the country’s Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC).
The recent ranking reflects Sierra Leone’s tremendous progress in peace and national cohesion. The ICPNC commended the country for moving up nine places globally and three places regionally, surpassing its previous 2024 ranking where it was placed 66th among 163 countries worldwide.
The report further noted that Sierra Leone now ranks ahead of many of its West African counterparts, including Ghana, Nigeria, Guinea, Liberia, and Ivory Coast, in both global and regional peace standings. Only The Gambia, ranked 55th globally, is two positions ahead of Sierra Leone.
This notable milestone is attributed to the concerted efforts of the government, citizens, security agencies, political parties, the media, local authorities, civil society organizations, and other peace-building and democratic institutions across the country.
The ICPNC expressed its profound gratitude to both local and international partners, the security sector, political parties, civil society groups, community-based organizations, local authorities, and the people of Sierra Leone for their resilience, dedication, and collaboration in making the country a model of peace.
The Commission affirmed its commitment to working hand-in-hand with its partners to sustain Sierra Leone’s impressive peace ranking, while also promoting development and national cohesion for a more peaceful and prosperous Sierra Leone.
