The Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA) has announced that the Sierra Leone Port has been ranked as the fastest-growing port globally, following recent international assessments. The announcement was made by SLPHA Director General Yankuba Askia Bio during a media engagement held at the Port on 17 November 2025.

Mr. Bio stated that the port earned its top ranking after a series of inspections and operational reviews conducted by an international rating agency. He further revealed that the port has also been listed among the safest in the world, dismissing what he described as widespread misinformation regarding port operations.

He reported a significant increase in vessel traffic, noting that more ships are now calling at the port, including vessels from neighbouring countries such as Guinea and Liberia. Mr. Bio also highlighted the creation of 200 jobs for young people since he assumed office, alongside a notable rise in revenue generation.

Addressing recent allegations concerning a container linked to cocaine allegedly originating from Sierra Leone, Mr. Bio clarified that the container numbered GCNU1333285 departed Sierra Leone empty. He said the shipping company, Grimaldi, which handled the container, confirmed it was discharged empty upon arrival at the Port of Lagos.

The Director General presented photographic and video evidence showing the container was empty when it left Sierra Leone. He emphasized that investigations are ongoing in Nigeria and that Nigerian authorities have pledged to share updates once the probe is concluded.

SLPHA also released a press statement from Grimaldi indicating that the container was inspected in Lagos on 29 October 2025, with port operations on the vessel beginning on 30 October. The container was flagged eight days after its empty discharge.

Mr. Bio urged the media to seek clarification directly from the Authority whenever concerns arise about port operations. He assured the public that the institution remains transparent and committed to providing accurate information, except in cases restricted by law.
