In a significant move to modernize the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), Inspector General William Fayia Sellu has announced comprehensive plans to upgrade the force’s garment production facilities. This initiative forms a key part of the broader police reform agenda focused on self-sufficiency, decentralization, and enhanced professional standards.

During a recent inspection of the SLP Garment Factory in Freetown, IGP Sellu unveiled a strategic vision to transform the facility into a modern hub for uniform production and distribution. A major feature of the plan includes establishing a showroom within the factory to improve visibility and service delivery.

The Inspector General also revealed plans to decentralize the uniform supply chain by creating regional showroom outlets across the country. This move is designed to reduce dependency on Freetown as the sole distribution center and ensure easier access to uniforms for officers stationed in remote areas.

“The days of police officers traveling long distances just to get a uniform should be behind us,” said IGP Sellu. “We are working towards a system that serves every officer, regardless of their location.”

He further emphasized that the SLP now possesses the manpower and technical expertise needed to produce standardized uniforms in-house. The facility is expected to undergo an assessment by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which could lead to an internationally recognized upgrade.

As part of the decentralization effort, regional commanders have been instructed to identify suitable locations for new showroom installations. This system is expected to improve operational efficiency, reduce logistical delays, and enhance morale within the force.

Encouraging police officers to support the ongoing reforms, IGP Sellu described the changes as essential to building a more professional and responsive police service.

“This is not just about uniforms,” he concluded. “It’s about transforming our systems and strengthening our service to the nation.”
