The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has on Tuesday 14th January 2025 announced the commencement of its electioneering process to elect executive members at various levels, including Sections, Zones, Chiefdoms, Constituencies, Districts, Regions, and National.
The National Secretariat has emphasized the importance of this exercise in ensuring the effective and efficient administration of the party, often referred to as the “Grand Old Party.”
In a statement issued by Umaru Koroma, National Secretary General of the SLPP, it was revealed that the National Executive Council (NEC) will convene a critical meeting at the party’s headquarters on Saturday, January 18, 2025. The meeting, which will commence promptly at 11 a.m., will focus on approving the timetable for the conduct of executive elections and the National Delegates Conference, where the party’s National Officers will be elected. All NEC members are expected to attend.
The statement clarified that the elections will be conducted in accordance with the rules and regulations published on February 5, 2021, in Government Notice No. 22. For the sectional and zonal elections, the party expressed a preference for consensus-building to elect executives at the local level. However, in instances where consensus cannot be reached, formal elections will be held.
Eligibility to vote in the sectional and zonal elections is restricted to fully registered and paid-up members of the party within their respective Sections and Zones. The validation and verification of voters will be conducted by the existing zonal and sectional executive members, the constituency chairman and secretary, youth and women’s leaders, a representative from the district executive, and a local authority. This process ensures that only bona fide members are allowed to participate and that each member votes in only one section or zone.
All party members who wish to participate in these elections have been encouraged to register, pay their dues, and submit their names to their respective sectional and zonal executives. Members who are already registered and paid-up can also submit their details. The validated list of registered members will be published at the designated election venues at least two days before the elections and subsequently transmitted to the National Secretariat, with copies sent to the District and Regional Secretariats.
The SLPP emphasized that any member whose name does not appear on the validated list will not be allowed to participate in the elections at that level.
The National Secretariat expressed gratitude to all party members for their cooperation and urged everyone to work towards ensuring a smooth, transparent, peaceful, and democratic process in the upcoming elections.
